Source of Fuel

The ideal heating system for your home depends on the availability of fuel. The common fuel sources for domestic heating systems are electricity, solar gas and oil. Let’s say, you are living in a place where you can receive a lot of sunshine, then you must consider solar power as a source of fuel. On the other hand, if you want to heat a cabin in the woods and there is no electricity then you must consider a propane-powered system. 

AFUE, HSPF and SEER Ratings

The US department of energy has set Annual Fuel Utilization Energy (AFUE) as a national standard for measuring the combustion of furnaces. AFUE is a term you’ll acknowledge when shopping for furnaces or boilers. It is similar to a motor vehicle’s MPG rating. A furnace or boiler with a higher AFUE rating is more energy-efficient.  On the other hand, Heating Seasonal Performance Fact (HSPF) is used to measure the efficiency of heat pumps. Fuel Utilization Efficiency ratings show the efficiency of the heating system according to different seasons. Also, you must consider HSPF and Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings while purchasing a new heating system. An HSPF evaluates how efficiently the compressor and electric resistance elements work and  SEER ratings describe the efficiency of a heat pump.
